Tra c Grooming and Wavelength Assignment in SONET/WDM Rings1 Xijun Zhang and Chunming Qiao Abstract|In high-speed SONET rings with point-to-point WDM links, the cost of SONET Add-Drop Multiplexers (SADMs) can be dominantly high. However, by grooming tra c (i.e. multiplexing lower rate streams) appropriately and using wavelength ADMs (WADMs), the number of SADMs can be dramatically reduced. In this paper, we propose optimal or near-optimal algorithms for tra c grooming and wavelength assignment to reduce both the number of wavelengths and the number of S-ADMs. The algorithms proposed are generic in that they can be applied to both unidirectional and bidirectional rings having an arbitrary number of nodes under both uniform and non-uniform (i.e. arbitrary) tra c with an arbitrary grooming factor. Some lower bounds on the number of wavelengths and S-ADMs required for a given tra c pattern are derived, and used to determine the optimality of the proposed algorithms. Our study shows that using the proposed algorithms, these lower bounds can be closely approached in most cases or even achieved in some cases. In addition, even when using a minimum number of wavelengths, the savings in S-ADMs due to tra c grooming (and the use of WADMs) are signi cant, especially for large networks.

This paper considers grooming of low speed traf-c into high speed lightpaths in a WDM based optical ring with a primary goal of reducing the cost of the entire system, which is dominated by the cost of the SONET transmission equipment connected to the optical ring. The paper attempts to enumerate the architectural options provided by SONET to arrive at a cost-eeective solution, including UPSR a...

In this paper we consider traac grooming in WDM/SONET ring networks when the ooered traac is characterized by a set of traac matrices. Our objective is to minimize the cost of electronic Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) in the network, while being able to support any ooered traac matrix in a rearrangeably non-blocking manner. We provide several methods for reducing the required number of ADMs for a...

In high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed synchronous optical network (SONET) ring networks, the terminal equipment costs associated with electronic multiplexing can be predominantly high. Placing a wavelength add–drop multiplexer (WADM) at each network node allows certain wavelengths to optically bypass the node without being electronically terminated. This approach can effectively reduce ...

High speed SONET rings are widely used as network infrastructure. In WDM/SONET rings, the SONET add/drop multiplexers (SADMs) can significantly increase the overall system cost. By traffic grooming, the number of SADMs as well as the number of wavelengths required can be reduced dramatically. Generally, traffic grooming includes two parts: circuit construction and circuit grooming. Efficient ci...

Most of today's optical networks are built on E:ONET rings [I]. Using WDM technology, multiple rings can be sup ported on a single fiber ring [3]. In this architecture, each wavelength independently carries a SONET ring. Each SONET ring can further support multiple low speed streams (e.g. an OC48 SONET ring can support 4 OC-12 or 16 OC-3 streams at the same time). At each node a WDM Add/Drop Mu...
